EPA 608 Exam Day Checklist: What to Bring and What to Expect

2026-09-01By ExamReady Team

What makes EPA 608 exam day unique: it's open book

The EPA 608 exam is one of the few certification exams where you are explicitly allowed to bring reference material. You can bring a clean (no handwritten notes) copy of the Section 608 regulations, the AHRI publication, and certain manufacturer-published materials. This is a major advantage — but it only helps if you know how to find answers quickly under time pressure.

Most EPA 608 exams are scheduled through PSI or Meazure Learning, the same testing organizations that proctor NHA and ASCP exams. The check-in process and ID requirements are nearly identical to those other proctored exams.

What to bring to the test center

| Item | Required | Notes | |------|----------|-------| | Government-issued photo ID | Yes | Driver's license or passport. Must be unexpired. | | Authorization-to-Test (ATT) letter | Yes | Printed copy from your EPA 608 program provider | | Section 608 regulations book | Yes | Clean, no handwritten annotations | | AHRI publication (if applicable) | Optional | Allowed for some exam types | | Calculator (non-programmable) | Optional | Most exams have on-screen calculators |

Pro Tip: Tab your reference book before exam day

The exam's open-book allowance is meaningless if you spend 10 minutes flipping pages. Use removable adhesive tabs to mark the recovery thresholds, leak-detection requirements, and cylinder color codes. Tabbing takes 30 minutes before exam day and saves 15-20 minutes during the exam.

What NOT to bring

| Item | Status | Reason | |------|--------|--------| | Cell phones | Prohibited | Even in airplane mode | | Smart watches | Prohibited | Including fitness trackers | | Notes, study guides, flashcards | Prohibited | Only the listed reference books are allowed | | Handwritten annotations in your book | Prohibited | The book must be clean | | Food and drinks | Limited | Water in a clear bottle is allowed | | Hats and hoods | Prohibited | Religious headwear is allowed |

If you bring prohibited items, you will be asked to store them in a locker or leave them in your car. You will not be able to access them during the exam.

The EPA 608 exam format

The EPA 608 exam structure varies slightly depending on whether you are taking Core, Type I, II, III, or Universal:

| Exam | Questions | Time limit | Passing score | |------|-----------|------------|---------------| | Core | 50 | 75 minutes | 72% (36 correct) | | Type I | 50 | 75 minutes | 72% (36 correct) | | Type II | 50 | 75 minutes | 72% (36 correct) | | Type III | 50 | 75 minutes | 72% (36 correct) | | Universal | 200 | 300 minutes | 72% (144 correct across all 4 sections) |

Most candidates take Core + Type I + Type II + Type III on separate days. The Universal exam (all four in one sitting) is less common but available.

What to expect during the exam

The exam is computer-based and multiple choice. You will see one question at a time with four answer choices. The questions include scenario-based items ("A technician is recovering R-410A from a residential split AC. What is the minimum recovery percentage?") as well as recall items ("What is the color code for an R-134a recovery cylinder?").

Watch Out For: The recovery percentage trick

Recovery percentage questions are the highest-stakes items on the EPA 608 exam. The trick is that the answer choices are close together (80% vs. 90% vs. 95% vs. 100%). Memorize the recovery thresholds: 80% for Type I, 90% for Type II high-pressure, 80% for Type II low-pressure, and 80% for Type III. Mixing these up is the most common reason candidates fail.

After the exam

When you submit the exam, you will see a preliminary pass/fail result on the screen. The official EPA 608 certificate arrives by mail within 2-4 weeks. If you pass Core, you receive a separate certificate; passing all four types earns the Universal certificate.

If you fail one exam (say Type II), you only retake Type II, not all four. The Core exam, once passed, does not need to be retaken.

The 48 hours before exam day

The day before the EPA 608 exam should be light review. Re-read the recovery-percentage thresholds, the cylinder color codes, and the Section 608 of the Clean Air Act excerpts that you have tabbed in your reference book. Stop studying by 6 PM. Sleep 8 hours.

On exam day, eat a protein-rich breakfast and arrive 30 minutes early. The check-in process is faster than you think, but you do not want to be rushed.
